ISLAMORADA, Florida Keys — David Dalu of Charleston, S.C., won the grand champion award at the prestigious Gold Cup Invitational Tarpon Tournament held June 15-19 in Islamorada.

Dalu, fishing with Captain Scott Collins of Marathon, Fla., built a lead on the second of five fishing days, subsequently holding off top tarpon tournament competitors Julian Robertson and Carlos Duncan to secure the win.

Dalu scored with four weight fish, 22 releases — the most releases of the tournament — and 6,660 total points.

Tournament rules mandated that release fish must measure a minimum of 48 inches long and weight fish must weigh at least 70 pounds.

New Zealand’s Julian Robertson took second place with 10 releases and four weight fish, including the tournament’s largest tarpon, which weighed in at 130.7 pounds. He was guided by Captain Tad Burke of Tavernier, Fla.

Carlos Duncan of Houston, Texas, took third place with seven releases and the tournament limit of five weight fish. Duncan fished with Captain Rob Fordyce of Homestead, Fla.

The tournament’s 25 anglers released 102 tarpon and scored 29 weight fish.
